Project archived on July 30th 2025
In 2025, we entered into a trial with the app Litterlotto with the goal to incentivise litter collection through rewarding prizes. Unfortunately, the app is no longer functional as of July 2025 due to its parent company Peasy going out of business. For the full statement from Litterlotto, please visit their website.
We’d like to thank everyone who took part in this pilot initiative. Your enthusiasm helped us test out a creative new way to engage with the public and make meaningful environmental change in our communities.
While this particular tool is no longer available, our commitment to innovation remains strong. We encourage you to try Save the Waves, another app- based platform that helps us to track trash across the region and report pollution in real time.
New projects may not always yield long-term collaboration, but they always give us opportunities to learn and grow. Thank you for your support, and we promise to continue working to keep Georgian Bay beautiful and healthy for future generations to come.

LitterLotto
Georgian Bay Forever has always functioned to protect the Georgian Bay waters and ecosystem from harm. One of the biggest threats that Georgian Bay and the global environment face is pollution, which is why our educational and community-based programming has focused heavily on identifying actionable ways to reduce the amount of litter in nature and change people’s behaviour when it comes to littering.
And there is no doubt that people’s behaviour needs to change. We have collected an average of around 1,000 pounds of trash from Georgian Bay beaches over the last three years during our Shoreline Cleanup. Most of that garbage constituted cigarette butts and single-use plastic items. Even amid a global environmental conservation crisis, people still casually throw away their garbage in natural public spaces. For that reason, we were thrilled to partner with LitterLotto and promote their free-to-play lottery, which allows users to enter submissions for sponsored prizes and weekly jackpots.
We love LitterLotto because it works on many levels to achieve the worthy goal of reducing pollution and changing the way people think about litter in the long term. The chance to win incentivizes people to clean up public litter and have fun doing it, while simultaneously modifying how people perceive the commonplace litter around them. One of the major issues we face is that people don’t always think of their minor actions, like flicking a cigarette butt onto the ground, as a problem. Likewise, many people have grown so used to seeing litter on the ground and in water, that they stop noticing it. We hope that by promoting this app, we will contribute to the awareness of litter, and encourage a proactive response to getting rid of it.
How it Works
Just download the app, enter a photo of yourself properly disposing of litter, and enter that photo for a chance to win.
Every entry is a chance to win, and there is no limit to the number of entries, so the more photos submitted, the higher your chance of winning!
Prizes include $50/week within our catchment zone.
Global Prize: Rather than a fixed amount every week, we’ve introduced a variable jackpot of up to £2000/month, with randomized timing and fluctuating prize amounts. This “surprise and delight” model is proven to boost long-term engagement by keeping users curious and motivated.
